The Nile Delta was already Christianized in the 2nd century AD and with Alexandria as the bishop's see, Christian teaching quickly spread throughout the country.
ContinueNothing compares to a sailing trip on the Nile with a traditional felucca in the land of the Nubians.
Whetheron day trips in the picturesque cataract area of Aswan or on a 2-day tour to the temples of Kom Ombo, the fascinating view of the great desert around the green river valley opens up again and again. The traces of history are omnipresent, the people friendly and open ... a way to encounter Egypt - and to learn to love it.
The felucca 'Horus' is a simple, traditional sailing boat that has sailed the Nile for thousands of years. It is just under 10 meters long, was rebuilt according to old plans and is made entirely of wood. The felucca has no motor and needs the wind and the current.

Program & Tour

The journey begins in Aswan, in the land of the Nubians on the border with Sudan. Here at the first cataract, the Nile Valley is particularly picturesque. The traces of history are omnipresent, the people friendly and open.
Program for a two-day tour
The tuk-tuk will pick you up from your accommodation in the morning with your luggage and take you to the jetty. The felucca 'Horus' is already fully equipped and anchored there. There are colorful cushions on deck where you can rest under the awning during the day. You will also eat your meals there. In the evening, you anchor on the shore or on one of the many islands, then the deck is transformed into a sleeping area. There is nothing better than sleeping under the starry sky - or staying awake and listening to the sounds of the night. During the day, you sail past colorful villages, thousands of mango trees and date palms. You stop at the old quarry in El Sisila and visit the temple of Kom Ombo. The driver will be waiting for you there to take you back to Aswan or to Luxor for a follow-up stay.
You can also extend the 2-day tour to a 3-day tour. Then you can sail to Edfu , visit the Horus Temple and continue your journey to Aswan or Luxor by train.
Traditional living

Kugi Dool is our new guesthouse on the small island of Sehel near Aswan. It is located on the edge of the village in the middle of a magnificent floodplain landscape directly on the Nile with a view of a breathtaking backdrop of granite rocks, where the famous rock inscriptions from pharaonic times can be found.
The house was carefully built in 2020 using traditional methods and local materials (mud and bricks), capturing the original features and authenticity of the Nubian architectural style. We promote Nubian culture and live in harmony with nature and the local community.
Kugi Dool is an oasis of calm and the perfect place to relax. Whether in the beautifully landscaped garden, in the courtyard or on the terrace, shady spots invite guests to linger. It is a unique retreat for individual travelers who share our passion for Egyptian culture and history and are looking for something special. Families are welcome!
The guest house has 4 rooms and 1 apartment. The room prices are between 20 € and 50 € including breakfast. It is under German and Nubian management. Our guests can use the barbecue area and the kitchen individually. We are also happy to serve delicious, freshly prepared meals in our courtyard on request.

A unique experience in the world of the Nubians
The building
A project with many challenges
First of all: building the felucca took much longer than my friends in Egypt and I had expected. In short, the timetable was far too ambitious and ill-advised. A construction period of 6 months was planned. We were also unable to keep to the pre-estimated costs - we all learned something new.
Ala'adin hired Nabil as our boat builder. But Nabil hadn't built a wooden boat for 20 years. Many problems arose in the details: How are the keel beams and frames connected? This frame, isn't it much too low? Ala'adin had not been sleeping well for a long time, so Ala'adin and Nabil consulted their fathers, who now supervised the project. Without the experience of the old men, nothing could progress. Excursions to old boats that had broken apart provided the final clarification.

Traveling with friends!
It was inspiring and exciting to see how a family lives contentedly without unnecessary accumulation of material values in a village without paved roads, surrounded by houses made of mud and stone on an island in the middle of the Nile.
